The American coot (Fulica americana) is a medium-sized waterbird, commonly found in North Carolina's wetlands and often hunted alongside ducks. Despite its resemblance to ducks, the coot is actually a member of the rail family (Rallidae). It has a slate-gray body, a white bill with a dark band near the tip, and a distinctive white frontal shield on the forehead. Its lobed toes (not webbed) are adapted for swimming. Adults weigh 1-2 pounds with a wingspan of 23-28 inches. Coots feed primarily on aquatic plants, algae, seeds, and small aquatic invertebrates. They are strong swimmers and divers. In North Carolina, coots may be hunted during the same season dates as ducks, with a daily bag limit of 15.
