The mountain lion is a large, slender cat with a smallish head and noticeably long tail. Body length is 3 to 4 ft, tail length 2.5 to 3 ft, height at shoulder 25 to 30 in, and weight 70 to 170 lbs. The fur is a light, tawny brown that can appear gray or almost black depending on lighting. Despite popular belief, there are no black panthers in North America; no one has ever captured or killed a black mountain lion.

Habitat & Range

Mountain lions are generally found in remote mountains, canyonlands, or hilly areas with good cover. In Texas, they are found throughout the Trans-Pecos region, the brushlands of south Texas, and portions of the Hill Country.

Life History

Mountain lions are relatively uncommon, secretive animals and are carnivores. Their prey includes deer, wild hogs, rabbits, jackrabbits, javelinas, and rodents. Some occasionally kill livestock or dogs. They are solitary except during breeding. Typically 2 to 3 cubs per litter, with births occurring almost any time of the year. Females generally breed every two to three years. The species has the widest distribution of any wild cat, from Canada to South America. Formerly throughout North America, now mostly in remote western U.S., western Canada, and much of Mexico. A small population persists in southern Florida, where the species is considered endangered.

Status, Trends & Threats

No specific state or federal listing status is stated by TPWD for Texas. The Florida population is noted as endangered. TPWD has published a Texas Mountain Lion Research and Monitoring Plan 2026-2035.
