Written with Kindness, Not Condescension.

You're Not the First to Ask
Perfect โ you're exactly who this hub is built for. We assume zero prior experience. Every step starts at the beginning, with no jargon and no shame. Most experienced hunters and anglers were in your shoes within the last decade.
Less than you think. Beginner fishing setups start around $40. Camping can be done with borrowed gear for free. Hunting requires the most upfront investment โ typically $250-$400 โ but a hunter education course and basic tags are usually under $100.
Hunting and fishing both require state-issued licenses (with limited exceptions for free fishing days). Hunting also requires a hunter safety certificate in nearly every state. Camping and basic boating typically do not โ though some campgrounds require reservations.
That's the most common outcome on your first few trips, and it's completely fine. The point isn't a trophy โ it's the time outdoors. Every veteran outdoorsperson has stories of empty-handed days that turned out to be the best days. Persistence pays off.
Absolutely โ and we encourage it. Many states have youth-specific licenses, free fishing days, and family-friendly hunts. Our beginner camping pathway in particular is built around drive-up sites with facilities, perfect for introducing children to the outdoors safely.
After You Learn,
Teach Someone Else.
Beginners often become the most passionate advocates. After you learn, we hope you'll volunteer at a youth hunt, take a neighbor fishing, or teach a friend to set up a tent.
When we add shooting basics and boating basics, we'll do the same โ gentle, step-by-step, with room for mistakes.
